Press Release, February 10, 2023 Oakland CA:

The Wood Street Commons rejoiced in receiving notice that Judge Orrick had reinstated the temporary restraining order against the City of Oakland’s impending eviction. The restraining order was extended due to the fact that the City of Oakland and BOSS provided misleading information about the preparedness and safety of accommodations at the proposed community cabins site for Wood Street residents.

Only 20 cabins have been confirmed onsite, falling tremendously short of providing humane shelter for the Wood Street community. The City of Oakland and BOSS have continued to evade residents’ concerns at meetings about program agreements.

“We are grateful that Judge Orrick acknowledged the disorganized way these agencies have engaged with the community and misrepresented their services to both the court and the public,” says Wood Street resident organizer Menahz.

Wood Street residents appreciate all the ongoing community support and urge people to continue reaching out to Mayor Sheng Thao and LaTonda Simmons, the City Homelessness Administrator, to halt all evictions while the Wood Street residents’ concerns and past agreements are addressed. As well, the residents of the Wood Street Commons are asking for their proposals for dignified solutions to be immediately integrated into policy and service changes at the community cabins site.

The Wood Street Commons thanks everyone for celebrating this moment of small victory with them, and continuing the fight for the rights of all unhoused!
