Wood Street Commons Plans Solidarity Bike Ride to Sacramento: To Support Those Displaced from Camp Resolution

Press Release — Monday, September 9th, 2024

Who: The Wood Street Commons — with the motto “Homeless Helping Homeless” — a group of unhoused people from the Bay Area who have settled into a community in West Oakland

What: Third Annual Unhoused Solidarity Bike Ride

Where: 2601 Wood Street, Oakland, CA 94607

When: Friday, October 4th, 2023 8am-10am

On Friday morning, October 4th at 10 AM, Wood Street community members in Oakland, CA, and supporters will depart on a 110-mile bike ride to Camp Resolution in Sacramento. We invite members of the press to visit our community in West Oakland as we set off on this bike ride. The press conference will be at 9:30 AM. Members of the press are also welcome to accompany us along the ride and can reach out to resident organizer John Janosko for the route.

Facing repeated displacement and rebuilding cycles, some residents have lived there for 10 years, some have deep family ties to the neighborhood. As we face off with disconnected politicians and misinformed neighbors we are reaching out to build solidarity with other unhoused groups and allies to defend our basic human rights.

During the first annual bike ride, Wood Street residents helped Camp Resolution regain control of a parking lot, which Sacramento organizers were able to turn into a stable solution for homelessness. Camp Resolution has since been violently displaced, and Wood Street will show solidarity by visiting them at their new location. They will also meet up with members of the Vallejo Homeless Union at the halfway point to further strengthen connections among the movement for rights of the unhoused.

The Wood Street Commons is a group of unhoused people from the Bay Area who have settled into a community in West Oakland. On Monday October 7th, Wood Street residents will host a press conference on the front lawn of the State Capitol at 12:30 PM after speaking with staff of Assemblywoman Mia Bonta and Senator Nancy Skinner in their offices in order to advocate for a solution to homelessness led by those with lived experience.
