Migrants, immigrants and refugees surely see America as a bundle of contradictions. Our country, a beacon of hope for some, shows its most brutal face at the militarized border: shooting them with pepper balls, lining the border with deadly razor wire, separating families, detaining people in miserable conditions, abusing people with violence and sexual assault, denying people the right to claim asylum. Many people suffer and some die trying to cross the border, and then, those who do make it in are denied things like labor rights and social services (even though they pay taxes), and are endangered by the lies of grandstanding politicians. An especially ugly lie is one that tries to pit African Americans and immigrants against each other.

But, on the other hand millions of Americans are rejecting the lies, and thousands are stepping forward to aid newcomers in a variety of ways, including food, shelter, legal assistance and political advocacy, and welcoming the benefit of newcomers’ skills and ideas.

All of us suffer when our country mistreats immigrants, migrants and refugees. The militarization of the border, which extends 100 miles inland, restricts democracy for us all. Abusing immigrants and limiting their rights sets the stage for denying everyone’s rights.

As author David Bacon put it earlier this year, “Overcoming today’s increasingly reactionary and dangerous right-wing threat requires the unity of immigrants and nonimmigrants: each must fight for the other.”

Glimpses of the Terror Inside a Detention Hotspot

The patch pictured above appears on the uniforms of some guards at "Alligator Alcatraz" in Florida. Below the grim reaper riding on an alligator are two human skulls, similar to the Totenkopf or death's head that the Nazis who ran and guarded German WWII concentration camps had on their SS uniforms.

The Women Who Move the Labor Movement Forward

History shows that the labor movement moves forward when women organize. Women have repeatedly proven willing to confront power, build solidarity, and move the fight forward when others hesitate.

She was sentenced to life in prison. A new law set her free after 23 years.

Nicole Boynton was the first woman freed as part of Georgia’s Survivor Justice Act, putting a national spotlight on how courts discount abuse in homicide cases — especially for Black women.

Stop the War on Iran! Impeach Trump!

The US-Israeli war against Iran is unprovoked, immoral and illegal. The majority of the people of the US are opposed to it, and we are obligated to stand up and stop it. This is also an opportunity to impeach and remove Trump and try and set the country on a new course.

The True Economy

The real economy doesn’t live on Wall Street. The real economy is represented by people standing in line at food banks hoping the food doesn’t run out before their turn comes.
