On Martin Luther King Day, Rev. Edward Pinkney, President of the Benton Harbor [Michigan] Water Council speaks about the ongoing fight of the poor in his town to get clean water, free of lead and other toxins.

Jazmine is a young massage therapist who finds herself homeless, living in a large encampment after she became gravely ill, could not work and lost her home. She describes her shock and disbelief, having lived all over the world and never seen a country that neglects its people so badly. While remaining hopeful, she warns that “this could happen to anyone.”

The People’s Tribune interviewed Deanna Berry from Denmark, South Carolina about the town’s water struggle. Residents say water runs brown, stains the laundry and tastes bad. Virginia Tech Scientist Marc Edwards, who helped expose the lead in Flint’s water, said it is possible residents are drinking sewage water. “There’s hundreds of people here who say they’re always sick and can’t find out why. A lot of people have kidney failure, cancers, other illnesses that may be attributed to the water,” says Deanna. “Chi Xmas” is a Christmas song for our times, meant to honor the holiday while wrestling openly with many deep ironies surrounding it in 2017. Written two years ago and now professionally recorded with full instrumentation and brought to life through this beautiful video by Lexley Adesanya, it serves as an offering to both the tradition of modern Christmas music and the tradition of modern “anti-Christmas” music. While nativity scenes and traditional carols recount the story of a poor couple seeking refuge, the humble birth of a savior, and the beginning of “peace on earth and goodwill towards men,” today’s homeless refugees wander the streets of our cities in search of protection from the elements; police continue to terrorize Black, brown, and working class people across the country; and governments around the world prepare for more endless war. “Chi Xmas” challenges listeners who cherish the story and spirit of Christmas to reflect honestly on its meaning today.

Based on the work of ACLU of Michigan investigative reporter Curt Guyette, “Here’s To Flint” is an exhaustive probe into how the city of Flint was left exposed to lead-tainted drinking water for nearly two years. Guyette broke the story of lead contamination in the Flint water supply in July when he published an EPA memo highlighting toxic-waste levels of lead in the water flowing into one Flint residence. The ACLU hired local filmmaker Kate Levy to team up with Guyette to produce the documentary.

Humans Need Not Apply is a fifteen minute video explaining automation and how it will fundamentally change the economy and way of life for workers across the world. Not just physical laborers either, this video explains how professional and even creative workers will be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI). He explains how the economy will be fundamentally changed forever. “This is an economic revolution. You may think we have been here before, but we haven’t” CGP Grey states bluntly. The Democratic candidates for president faced off Sunday night in Flint, Michigan, which has been in the national spotlight over the poisoning of the city’s water.

The crisis began in 2014, when an unelected emergency manager appointed by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder switched the source of the city’s drinking water from the Detroit system to the corrosive Flint River.

This movie is a great tribute to Nelson Peery, an American revolutionary who  died on September 6th, 2015 in Chicago at the age of 92. He was a life-long communist and never failed to put forth his vision of the new cooperative world that is possible. He was a founder of the People’s Tribune, a member of the People’s Tribune Editorial Board and a founding member of the League of Revolutionaries for a New America. He is the author of several books about his experiences in the revolutionary movement.  He will be missed deeply by many.
