‘We Are The Economy.’ Stand in Solidarity with Economic Disruption

Blackout Friday

If there is ever a time to take action to save some sort of democracy in the United States it is now. Many organizations are working hard across the country with global solidarity to shut down the runaway train of the Trump administration that’s on a high speed rail to fascism.

Hopefully, you will participate in the February 28th Blackout and the many other scheduled events to follow.

The People’s Union USA, a fast growing movement founded by John Swartz, has organized an economic disruption for Friday, February 28th starting at midnight asking for people to spend $0 for 24 hours. The Blackout calls for no spending on gas, fast food, or purchase anything from the retailers: Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy. Other dates will include economic blackouts for any major corporation that bows down to the oligarchy and the current administration.

The ask is to buy only essentials like food, emergency supplies, and medicine from locally owned businesses and only pay in cash.

The Economic Tour of The People’s Union USA includes a couple of boycotts a month from February leading up to July 4th. For a week at a time, corporations to boycott include Amazon March 7-14, Nestle March 21-28, Walmart April 7-14, a second Economic Blackout April 18, General Mills April 21-28, Amazon May 6-12, Walmart May 20-26, Target June 3-9, McDonalds June 24-30 and an Independence Day Boycott on July 4th. https://thepeoplesunionusa.com/

Al Sharpton, Founder and President of National Action Network (NAN) is also scheduling boycotts. Sharpton said,  “As I stood in Washington on King Day, just as Donald Trump put his hand on the Bible and launched a crusade against DEI, I made it clear NAN will be thoughtful in how it identifies those who have gone back on their word to us.” Sharpton said a special council with NAN partners will look at those companies who have shut down their DEI commitments and examine their profit margins keeping in mind Black buying power. NAN will announce their boycott during their convention in New York being held April 2-5. See National Action Network

General Strike US was organized by two friends from New York City who leaped into action in 2022 after Roe V. Wade was overturned. It is an ongoing movement striving to get 3.5% of the population or 11 million people to sign strike cards. General Strikes are historical and date back centuries. They can last from a week to a month’s time, usually ending in success. We suggest to start signing a strike card and share the link with family, friends, and co-workers. On their website, General Strike states: “We’ve voted, we’ve protested, and still, they ignore us. Our government refuses to meet our basic needs while the billionaire class hoards wealth and power. The General Strike is a grassroots network of regular people who know our greatest power is our labor and our right to refuse it. We aim to unite every person and organization fighting for racial, economic, and environmental justice so that together, we can see real change in our lifetimes.”

Have you participated in a 50 States-50 Protests event at your state Capitol recently? It’s a movement that is building fast and by the thousands. 50501 protests were a rapid response to the Trump administration’s actions and its plutocratic allies. It is a visual opposition. It quickly organized without money, structure, or official backing.  It was successful, having 80 protests in all 50 states. Twelve days later another protest, “No Kings Day” was organized. On March 4th another 50 States 50 Protests will be held at 50 State Capitols called “March 4 Liberty”.

People are not sitting quietly while democratic institutions, civil liberties and the rule of law are being undermined.

There are so many organizations mobilizing quickly and coming together in masses to stop the destruction we are facing in the aftermath of being stripped of our basic human needs while the billionaires are reaping the benefits from our labor.

Stopping this coup will take all of us to fight back together. If you can’t make it physically to an event, phone your member of Congress. Phone Bank now for those candidates running for those seats to win back the House. Phone bank for Wisconsin to stop Elon Musk from owning their Supreme Court. Join an organization that is in the fight like the Working Family Party, Democratic Socialists of America, or Progressive Democrats of America. These organizations have phone banks and events ready for you to join. They are fighting for the people and we all know by now the two party system no longer exists and hasn’t for a long time. If you don’t feel comfortable phone banking or protesting, donate to an organization that is on the frontlines. Take a zoom class on non-violent direct action and a class on knowing your rights. Attend a Bernie Sanders’ rally near you. He has been warning us for a long time about the direction our country was heading and here we are. It’s about stopping the Oligarch. Bernie reminds us, “We believe in a government of the people, by the people, for the people—not a government of the billionaire class, by the billionaire class, for the billionaire class.” You can’t afford to sit this one out.
