On New Year’s Day, a Kansas City homeless man found his friend frozen to death in a shed where they slept at night. “l picked him up and he was frozen.” A friend of the two men said “They’re all somebody’s child that’s cold, that’s hungry.”
Everyone’s child: millions of them across the country, of all ages and backgrounds, thrown out into the cold by a failing economic system and a political system that refuses to put human needs first. Each year cities and towns across the country memorialize and mourn those who have died in their streets of exposure and neglect. Homeless people and others are taking up the demand that their government make housing all a priority, and organizing to house the homeless, by any means necessary: whether defending tent communities or taking over empty housing for homeless mothers and children.
