“A long suffering post industrial Michigan needs a game changing win on Tuesday. We will be pulling for what could be a new beginning for us all.”

MICHIGAN —In August, Michigan’s Democratic Senatorial candidate Abdul El–Sayed beat the odds. He won a razor-thin victory in a primary against an opponent who had an astronomical war chest (primarily funded by pro-Israel lobby AIPAC) intended to secure her win. At the time, the Democratic Party establishment was all in behind his opponent.

Now times have changed. Abdul El-Sayed wasn’t supposed to win. Now the world is watching. Can a Muslim and a progressive promising to fight for Medicare for all, while keeping corporate a.k.a. dark money out of his campaign, secure the victory?

In October, reporters from Swiss NPR and a news outlet from France attended an El-Sayed campaign rally in Flint, interviewing attendees about the election. They said their countries were following the race very closely. Cenk Uygur of TYT (The Young Turks) fame noted that the Michigan Senate race was “the most important non Presidential election of my lifetime.”

Establishment Democrats have now rallied behind El-Sayed as it has now become obvious that the Democrats could take the majority in the Senate, as well as the House of Representatives. Everyone is watching to see if grassroots money and a + powered campaign can once again overcome dark corporate money.

In this highly contested race, Democrats know that no victory is to be had without the Black vote. (Detroit has a 75-78% Black population.) They have now sent in former President Barack Obama as well as Representative James Clyburn, (who supported El-Sayed’s opponent in the primary.)

A long suffering post industrial Michigan needs a game changing win on Tuesday. We will be pulling for what  could be a new beginning for us all.
