Trump, the no–more–wars president, has initiated another war, this time as a joint US-Israel attack on Iran. The war is unprovoked, immoral and illegal. People are in the streets in cities across the US, calling for an end to the war now.
The US and Israel have bombed hospitals, schools, even crowds in the streets in Iran. They have assassinated many of Iran’s leaders and their families. They killed more than 150 young girls at one school, and more young people at another school. The US and Israeli governments act like brutal beasts. This does not reflect the morality of most Americans.
This is the latest and most dangerous of the roughly 250 US wars and military interventions since 1991. That list includes the Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan. Yemen, and others. There are also the attacks on Venezuela, and threatening Greenland and Cuba. These actions transcend Democratic and Republican administrations. They are a reflection of the needs and desires of the billionaires and corporations who control the US, not simply a reflection of who the president is or the party in power.
There were lies to justify the other wars. The lies about Iran consisted of disinformation about Iran’s supposed nuclear weapons program. It does not exist. Iran is no threat to the US. The US did not negotiate for peace in good faith; Iran had agreed to a plan, and the US and Israel proceeded with the attack anyway. This wasn’t the first time. Now, no other country believes a word the US says. This is dangerous! And many have pointed to the influence of Israel and pro-Israel billionaires in the US in provoking this war. Who is dictating US foreign policy?
We need to reject the normalization of war. The US and Israel have no right to impose their will by violence on another country or dictate to any other nation what should be the nature of their government. Only the Iranian people have the right to decide who governs Iran and how. Also, this war threatens all of humanity. If the US and Israel begin to lose, many observers predict that Israel will use nuclear weapons. Then, other nuclear powers might directly confront the US and Israel, and this could precipitate a nuclear war.
We have the opportunity to set a new course for our country. We are contending with fascism, the ICE raids, concentration camps, the genocide in Palestine, a deteriorating economy, and now a major war! Trump is not the ultimate source of the problem – the billionaires who run this country are. Nonetheless, stopping the war and organizing to remove Trump would be an important step toward building something new. Trump violated the Constitution and international law by attacking Iran; this alone justifies impeaching him.
The majority of Americans, even in Trump’s base, oppose the war. The economy is bad and this war will make it worse. This is an opportunity to impeach and remove Trump, and to elect a Congress that might represent the actual interests of the American people. We need a foreign policy that reflects our true morality, and a government that takes care of our human needs instead of squandering trillions on war while poverty continues to grow in our country.
No party or institution will come to save us. We, the people, are building the necessary unity and organization to save ourselves, and this effort needs to grow massively. Stop the war. Impeach, remove and imprison Trump. Increase the resistance!
