“Why are they trying to make it more difficult to vote when there is no evidence of fraud in the electoral system? It is because new candidates are running for office across the country to represent the needs of poor, unhoused, and working-class voters.”
These are new times. Voting has never been more important. In the past, many have become disillusioned with elections because of the unkept promises dangled by typical establishment candidates in both major parties, and with the corrupt deals these candidates make – they always seem to come out richer as a result of the election.
This election is different. The trump establishment and his supporters, especially in the South, have taken steps to block voting and disqualify voters. They do not want you to vote.
It’s happening here in California too. The establishment put on the ballot a requirement that voters show government I.D. in order to vote. (Proposition 39.) This proposition must be opposed.
Why are they trying to make it more difficult to vote when there is no evidence of fraud in the electoral system? It is because new candidates are running for office across the country to represent the needs of poor, unhoused, and working-class voters.
Nationally, the Poor People’s Campaign/A National Call for Moral Revival has organized hundreds of marches to the polls to mobilize voters. Why do we need to vote and protect our democratic right to vote?
As Angie Nixon, who is running for the U.S. Senate in Florida, said, “We protect democracy because people cannot fight for a better life if their voices are being silenced.”
In Sacramento, both Mai Vang, who is running for Congress, and Dr. Flo Cofer, who is running for the Sacramento Board of Supervisors, are candidates representing the basic needs of their constituents. They do not take corporate money and they are calling for a change to corrupt policies that favor the rich.
These election outcomes depend on us.
The Sacramento Poor People’s Campaign has taken the fight to the polls by registering voters at Loaves & Fishes, a major downtown service center for the unhoused. On Monday, October 17, Poor People’s Campaign volunteers are visiting “Waking the Village” to continue this outreach. On October 29, the Sacramento Poor People’s Campaign is organizing a “March to the Polls.” Check out the news of these events in the Sacramento PPC newsletter and join us!
