10-Think Outside the Box- embrace the cliché.
Depending on the day, it’s Magnificent March or March Madness. I’m not going to obsess about weather — or other — weirdness. I’ll let myself have a few moments of bliss sharing these pictures with the audience that has continued to grow and delight me.
Chess is a thinking person’s game, and those are boxes, albeit one-dimensional. So I’ve got “think outside the box” covered, right? This was from my archives, a visit to downtown Chicago’s Michigan Avenue, where life is always interesting. I didn’t play. I’d be too distracted! The object of the game is to think about how to keep your king outside the box.
11-In Stitches- Interpret that as you will.

I don’t do any kind of needlework. I’m in awe of those who do! My friend Pat LaMarche, the brains and heart of the Memorial Blanket Project, and a knitter, for the past five years, has invited people to make blankets to give to people experiencing homelessness. This art display happens on Winter Solstice, December 21, the longest night of the year, also known as Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day/Night. How many stitches of love (on an estimated 5,000 blankets), done by strangers for strangers, have been done in the past five years? On December 21, 2026, Pat and her all-volunteer team will spread out their blankets, made by people from across the globe, in New York City.
12-Best Foot Forward- Interpret that as you will.

Last March, I was invited to speak to a group of women — mothers — staying at a shelter in Joliet. I was lucky enough to be accompanied by one of the Three Melissas, an astute and friendly mom who experienced raising her seven kids while homeless. I stood back and let her share her wisdom with the group. Before we got started, we both happened to spot these shoes on one of the moms about the same time, and did all we could to keep from gawking and giggling. Homeless or not, those are SHOES and this mom put her best foot forward! I’m glad it was her feet, not mine!
13-When We Were Young- Like the song, or not.

A bit of self-revelation…when I was young I was an ardent Superman fan. If I had hung onto my Superman comic collection, I’d be a billionaire. My visit to Metropolis, IL a few years back (before I was young), brought mixed feelings of childhood memories and accepting that Superman wasn’t going to save us.
14-Holes-Like the book, or not.

Not often would I find beauty in a bullet hole, but at this ultra-rural art center in the Foothills of Kansas, I spied this hole in their front window and marveled at the perspective it offered of the great outdoors. I wouldn’t recommend this decorating technique in your house. I didn’t get the hole story of why or how or who…
Of all the good things Medium has to offer, the 52 Week Photo Project brings me the most joy. Thanks to the Full Frame — 52 Week Photo Project team!
