A Last Earthly Life
By Kathy Powers
Today,
the last alive organism,
a lone sunflower
Starved
by a field of
dusty concrete soil
Parched
by plastic water
that quenched her
Choked
her life breath snuffed
by fossil gases
Exhausted
by fine particulates
that blocked the sun
Deafened
by continuous racket
grind, grind, grind
Finally,
Drooped her bright face
in surrender
Deafened
by continuous racket
grind, grind, grind
Finally,
Drooped her bright face
in surrender
