Of course
there are flowers in hell.
Some people smell them every day.
The blossoms of bigotry
and the roses of rage.
There are verdant gardens growing
among the decay of these gated communities.
Oh, the daffodils of damnation
get plenty of water!
It rains resentment at night—
And at dawn
malevolent mushrooms sprout on the lawn.
It takes some tending
but the tools are traditional:
fear is the primary fertilizer.
You reap what you sow
and plant what you know.
Of course flowers grow just fine in hell:
A bouquet for each and every colonizer.
